Time for New Years Goals!

So I’m at my family’s house for Christmas and have already enjoyed chocolate truffles, almond pound cake, sweet potato pie…do I need to go on?

Christmas is a grand time of celebration as it should be, but come New Years, there will be a few pesky pounds to deal with no doubt. Now is the time to set your goals for the New Year. How many pounds will you lose? By what date? What is your doable plan? Jump start your goal setting by listening to my podcast about goals and losing weight at http://www.losingweightafterbaby.com

Hot Tip Moms: Be specific with your New Years resolutions. Make up a doable plan for weight loss (i.e. I will walk every Wednesday for 45 minutes, eat desserts once a week instead of everyday). Reward yourself when you reach your goals.

Remembering Miscarriage

It was just 2 Christmases ago that I lost a precious baby girl at 26 weeks.  Read my story on http://www.losingweightafterbaby.com or watch it on You Tube at

I hope it will encourage you or a friend who have experienced this terrible loss.  It can be especially hard to lose the weight after a miscarriage, but hang in there, it can be done.  I like what Oswald Chambers said, “If God has made your cup sweet, drink it with grace.  If He has made it bitter, drink it in communion with Him.”  You are never alone.

I also talk about  podcast this week, “Losing Weight After Baby” which you can find on my website or iTunes.

Don’t do this with chocolate

I bought lots of truffles and wrapped them up for our neighbors to invite them to a Christmas party.  The good news was I was  spreading good cheer and giving away chocolate (instead of buying boxes for myself).  The bad news is that I popped a lot of truffles in my mouth while I was wrapping them up.  Plus, having these chocolates on my kitchen island gave me an incredible urge to open one of the bags and dive in!

Hot Mom Tip:  If you’re going to give away something delicious to eat, wrap it in something you can’t see through, or put it away in your house so you won’t have to look at it.  Staring at freshly baked cookies or homemade breads all day will not help you with weight loss.

Exercises by Baby

I watch the physical development of my one year old.  From the commando crawl, to crawling on fours, to pulling up, to teetering and standing.  One day I tried to imitate her for a few moments.  It didn’t take long to be out of breath, crawling on all fours is hard work!

Hot Exercise Tip for Moms: Imitate your baby if he is moving.  Crawl when he crawls.  Wave your arms when he waves his.  Roll over when he does.  Not only will you both have a blast, you’ll find yourself much more active all day long, a great step towards weight loss after baby.

Spin class anyone?

Two words have radically helped me to lose my baby weight:  spin class.  My mom and I have attended a spin class together twice a week for the past 3 years!  This appointment has gotten me out of bed and on to a bike.  I could never do it so consistently on my own.  I have to pick up my mom so I show up.  If we flake out, we have to call our instructor and she gives us the third degree about missing.  The accountability keeps us going.

Hot Tip for Moms:  Get accountable.  Pick a class and stick to it.  Have a partner to pick up or who’s coming to get you.  Get an instructor on board.  Make appointments for fitness in your calendar like you would a dentist or doctor’s appointment.  It’s just as or even more important for your health!

When your baby turns one

noelle-birthday-450.jpg

My baby turned one this past weekend.  We had a simple party with cupcakes.  My mom spelled out her name in fondant.  Too cute, I would have never had the patience!

Hot Goal for Moms:  When your baby turns one, make it a goal to be at your pre-baby weight.  Sooner than one year is great too of course!  Don’t give up – you can lose the weight if you apply yourself.  If your baby’s birthday is long over, it’s still not too late!  Make a commitment to lose 2 pounds a week until you’re at your goal weight.
