Day 31 – Keep It Off for Life

What do most moms you know look like after baby?  Are they 5-20 pounds heavier than they were before baby?  It’s obvious normal (and healthy) to gain weight during pregnancy but it’s also pretty normal to keep that weight on, well after baby is born. 

When you decide to lose weight after baby (and actually do it), you’re a little like the fish pictured above.  You’re going against the tide. 

Your friends may not like that you’re focused on losing weight.  You might be called a fanatic or too intense.  You might be labeled as someone with “good genes.”  Others may tell you it’s not practical, reasonable, or doable to lose the pregnancy pounds.  But I’m here to tell you different.  Sure it’s hard to lose weight, but so are a lot of other things in life (i.e. childbirth!).  If you commit yourself to losing weight, follow a plan that works for you and have people to hold you accountable, you will succeed! 

Don’t buy into the lie that you can’t keep the weight off.  That you’ll lose 20 pounds just to gain it back again.  Be optimistic!  I had my first baby 4 years ago and have been pregnant 3 times since (1 baby, 2 miscarriages) and I still can wear size 6, my pre-pregnancy size.  It can be done! 

Remember, you’re going for positive, small, incremental changes that last!  Smaller portion sizes, exercising 3-4 times a week, occasional indulgences instead of frequent ones…when you practice good habits, one day at a time, you will keep it off FOR LIFE!
