Book Review: How Do You Tuck in a Superhero?

I was instantly attracted to this book because of its title.  I have a little boy in kindergarten who isn’t really into super heroes (dinosaurs and cars are his thing), but he does tie a shirt around his neck and pretend to be a super hero from time to time!

Author Rachel Balducci is the proud mom of five boys – thus the book!  She has a wonderful way of bringing her home into yours.  As you read of her boys’ adventures, you will say one of two things: “Wow, I’m glad I don’t have all those boys” or “Wow, that sounds exactly like my home!”

Rachel’s subtitle, “…And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys” is really what the book is all about.  It’s not prescriptive (this is HOW to tuck in that superhero), it’s more descriptive (this is WHAT happened in my house today).  You will be laughing within minutes of opening the book.  If you’re in a “relating to another mom” mood, you won’t be able to put it down.

I loved all the humorous slices of life like her elementary school son coming home with the exciting news that he had been cast as the lead in the school play – he was going to be Omelet!  (It was Hamlet).  Or her son’s fascination not with dinosaurs or other popular animals – he loved cows.  Cows!

I must say for the most part, this book is for moms.  Perhaps no surprise there.  I read some parts to my husband and he didn’t find them nearly as funny as I did.  So if you know a mom who wonders if her wild boys are normal, point her towards this book.  It will make her feel understood and not alone.  Author Rachel Balducci is the kind of mom you’d love to run into.  Not only would she be easy to talk to, she’d always have a good story on hand!

Thank you Revell Publishing for this wonderful book to review.  How Do You Tuck in a Superhero?  And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys is available wherever fine books are sold.

Reward Yourself with a Bubble Bath

Okay I talked about hitting the bathtub in my last post when you are sore.  I’m here again to say – if you enjoy baths – make time to soak in a hot bubble bath this week.

Whether you’re sore or stressed, a few minutes in the bathtub will work wonders.  You don’t have to leave your house.  It’s totally inexpensive and totally relaxing.

When you slip underneath the bubbles, breathe deeply and forget about the things you’re worried about.  Instead just relax and think about a few things you are thankful for.

Hope the picture above of my baby Lucy will be an inspiration to you – take time to pamper yourself!  A hot bath isn’t caloric and you won’t regret doing it the next day.  It’s a great reward when you’re losing weight after baby!  Now if we could just get a big ducky bathrobe like Lucy’s…

Sore, Sore, Sore

Are you sore?  If so, that’s good!  Soreness let’s us know we are working out and pushing our bodies to the next level.  It also let’s us know…turn on the hot water and bring on the bath!

My back is what is most sore right now.  The first workout of P90X is back and chest and wow, it packs a punch!  (P90X is a set of home workout DVDs).  Thank God for my husband doing P90X with me or I would’ve been seriously tempted to bail about right now.  We’re starting our 4th week of doing it.

And yes, I’m still about the same weight.  The frustration!  I think my problem is my P in “P90X” which is peanut butter.  My favorite go-to food is a bit on the caloric side.  So this week, I’m going to put my peanut butter spoon down.  Pray for me!

Getting Closer, Weighing In

My husband wrote me a note recently…”Hard by the mile, a cinch by the inch.”  You get the heart of that – but I’m thinking getting rid of the inches around my belly is anything but a cinch!

I’m eating low-carb still and getting closer to my goal weight.  I’m 137.7 lbs right now which I’m encouraged with (my goal is 135).  I’m discouraged though because all my fat is in the middle so I still can’t wear lots of pants in my closet because they don’t fit yet.  I look forward to the day when I can pick out anything in my closet and actually wear it in public!

How about you?  How are you coming along with your short term and long term weight goals?  Keep pressing on sisters!

Speaking at MOMS of All Seasons at Maranatha Chapel!

I had a wonderful time speaking to the MOMS of all seasons group yesterday at Maranatha Chapel.  What a wonderful group of moms with babies of all ages, from newborns to teenagers.

Here I am pictured with my friend Reina who used to be my neighbor.  She is the proud mama of 3 kids and I’ve interviewed her before on my Losing Weight After Baby podcast.

I’m excited to return to Maranatha Chapel in the future – I love these high energy, enthusiastic moms!  Thank you for having me!

Invasion of the Chocolate Bunnies!

These are the bunnies in our home!  I bought the kids a bunny since I knew how much they wanted a chocolate bunny.  But then grandma and grandpa did the same thing, and then my cousin did too.  You know how it goes!  So what shall we do with all this leftover (tempting) chocolate in our homes?

Unfortunately my 3 year old remembers every piece of chocolate she receives and carefully keeps inventory in her mind.  “Mom, where is my chocolate in the pink box?”  “Mom, where are my candies from the Easter egg hunt?”

Here’s how we deal with the chocolate invasion.  We put the precious bunnies away, saving them for special occasions and treats.  Then as time passes, we will throw away a few things (but not the Godiva, what can I say!).

I must confess I took the week off to enjoy chocolate and a visit from family from the East Coast.  Tomorrow it’s back to Atkins.  The good news is that I kept doing P90X workouts all week except for one day when we went to Disneyland.  So I’m about a pound up from all my cheats.

Let’s work together to get these chocolate bunnies off our hips!

How to Use Your Laptop to Lose Weight

Hmmm…how can you use a laptop to lose weight?  After all, usually when using a laptop, you’re sitting still – not burning many calories at all.  You could hoist it over your head and use it like a free weight.  Or put it in your pantry to block the view to any tempting treats.

But I’m suggesting something different today.

If you’re a mom who likes to workout at home with an exercise DVD, why not take your laptop and move your workout to a different location at your house?

I did this recently by bringing the laptop outside to my backyard.  It was 7:00 am, still cool and crisp, the sun was shining softly.  I put on the P90X DVD and worked out outside.  It was really fun.  It was a fresh environment that took the staleness out of working out in the same room every day.

Can you do this in your backyard?  How about a different room of your house?  Just by mixing up the location, you can refresh your workouts.

Hey, you could even bring the laptop to a park and do your workout there…but you might want to bring a friend so you don’t feel too cheesy working out by yourself watching a DVD – ha!
